The Federal Government on Wednesday threatened to prosecute any
contractor found frustrating the speedy execution of on-going Erosion
Projects in the South Eastern zone of the country.
The Senior Special Adviser to President Goodluck Jonathan on Media
and Publicity, Dr Reuben Abati stated this in Abuja while briefing State
House correspondents on the outcome of the weekly Federal Executive
Council (FEC) meeting.
The meeting was presided over by President Goodluck Jonathan.
Abati said the President had already constituted a Committee, to be
headed by the Director General, Bureau of Public Procurement, Mr Emeka
Eze, to visit all the erosion project sites with a view to ascertain the
seriousness of the contractors.
He said that the Committee would assess the state of execution and
completion of the various projects, look at ways of better management of
the projects and also advise the government on the prioritisation of
the projects.
``One point that is made very clear by Mr President is that the
unserious contractors involved in any of these projects will have their
projects determined and maybe prosecuted if they are found culpable.’’
Other members of the Committee are Directors from the Federal
Ministries of Works; Environment; Land, Housing and Urban Development;
Water Resources, Ecological Office and the Office of Secretary to the
Government of the Federation (SGF).
According to him, the Committee must submit its findings before the commencement of this year’s rainy season.
Abati further disclosed that President Jonathan would on Monday flag-off the Centenary Celebration.
He explained that next year Nigeria would be 100 years as a geo-political entity.
He said the event would afford the nation an opportunity to celebrate
its achievements and ``the unity and uniqueness of the nation.’’ (NAN)
